Southern California Weekend Travel Guide

While Nashville may be the place I call home, my roots run back to southern California. I’ve been dozens and dozens of times over the course of my life and have more memories there than probably anywhere else in the world. I’ve recently had several people ask me where they should stay if they're visiting the area for a long weekend since "they know they can't do it all." While I certainly recommend taking your time to explore places like LA, San Diego and Orange County, I also believe you can easily cover a lot of territory in a short time if you want to see them all. So I took a trip last week to accomplish just that.

I’ve pulled together this “Greatest Hits” if you will, of my absolute favorite places to eat, where to stay, and what to do if you want to see the highlights of Southern California but don’t have an extended amount of time to dedicate to each destination. I must disclaim that I have plenty more recommendations that I wanted to include, but  I'm trying to be realistic about what you could actually accomplish (and save the extended recommendations for future posts that are dedicated to each city). So here are my top picks for San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles:

SAN DIEGO: North County

Given my soliloquy above about wanting to recommend everything but having to pick my favorites, I highly suggest focusing your time in San Diego on the north county area. Not only will it be the most convenient in terms of driving, but it also happens to be where all my favorites are (of course, I’m biased because this is  where my family is from and where I’ve spent the majority of my time).

STAY:

FOUR SEASONS RESIDENCE CLUB AVIARA

Four Seasons Residence Club Aviara  is nestled in Carlsbad, one of the many great beach towns in northern San Diego. I've always stayed with family for as long as I can remember when I've visited, so this was one of my first times staying in a hotel here (and it was also one of my most memorable hotel experiences by far). The property is wrapped by a lush + idyllic setting that will send you into a tranquil oasis from the moment you arrive. We were greeted with a fresh juice tasting (pressed locally on site and also available for purchase at their barista bar) followed by a tour of the grounds. The Palmera Pool at the Meadows Clubhouse is the perfect central point to connect Seasons restaurant, Driftwood Fitness Center and Driftwood Spa.

We stopped for manicures at Driftwood Spa to unwind from a long day (where we sipped delicious champagne from the prettiest flutes I've ever seen). The spa was relaxing and uplifting at the same time and our technician was so kind and fun to talk to. We stayed in the Summits Village, which had sweeping views of Carlsbad (and we loved sitting out there to enjoy our room service).

As if they hadn't already sold me enough, we went to Seasons for their interactive chef’s table inside the working kitchen for a signature one-of-a-kind “Taste the Senses” experience with Chef Ball at the Kitchen Counter and a well-appointed private dining room. It was incredible. Gracie is gluten free and dairy-free (except goat cheese + manchego) and they still wow-ed us with one of the most delicious 5 course meals I've ever had (including watermelon gazpacho, guianciale and poached egg with micro-kale, local halibut with coconut polenta and topped it all off with mango passion fruit sorbet with raspberry beignets). And to make all of that even better, each course came with a carefully selected wine pairing.

I definitely intend to stay here again when I come back to San Diego. The entire experience was incredible, the staff couldn't have been more kind or hospitable, & I highly recommend them if you're staying in the area.

EAT:

LAS OLAS

las olas mexican cardiff by the sea

Whenever I've played "Last Meal" with my friends (where you all share what you would eat if you knew it was your last meal) I've always included a course at Las Olas. I grew up coming here with my family for dinner for as long as I can remember, and it's one of my favorite restaurants on earth.

Sit on the patio for lunch or to watch the sunset, drink a margaraita (or 12 because they are delicious) and enjoy the most delicious fish tacos you've ever had in your entire life.

PIPES

PIPES CAFE CARDIFF BY THE SEA ENCINITAS CA

Are you picking up on all my nostalgic vibes yet? If not, here's some more. I spent mornings in the summer going on runs from my aunt's house to Pipe's for breakfast before heading to the beach. This cash-only, hole-in-the-wall is a local gem that's crawling with surfers, dogs and happy beach-town residents that love starting their day with a yummy breakfast (don't we all?) Sit on the porch with your coffee + breakfast burrito and take in the local scene while the marine layer (aka that calming grey dreariness) burns off.

ALSO TRY:

BEACHES:

ORANGE COUNTY: LAGUNA BEACH

After your time in North County San Diego, work your way up I-5 to Orange County. There are tons of great towns like Newport Beach or Dana Point, but sticking to the "Greatest Hits" I recommend focusing on Laguna Beach. This beach town is the ideal for art lovers (TONS of great shops and festivals throughout the year like Sawdust), nature enthusiasts, and anyone else who enjoys incredibly epic views (the gorgeous coastline will trick you into believing you've somehow transported to Spain).

LAGUNA BEACH

STAY:

When we were initially planning, we almost booked a new property that I was really excited about (The Ranch at Laguna Beach) but we ended up staying with friends both nights that we were in Orange County. If you’re looking to book a hotel, I recommend checking them out (I’m planning to go back someday!) You can also find great spots on Airbnb or splurge with one of the following resorts:

EAT + DRINK

LAS BRISAS

laguna beach las brisas patio
las brisas guacamole
las brisas shrimp cocktail
las brisas ahi tuna poke

When I think of restaurants with a beautiful view, Las Brisas has always been one of the top on my list. But once you try the food you'll have a difficult time deciding which of the two is better. Nestled on a cliff in Heisler Park, the Las Brisas cuisine is inspired by Mexico's west coast and prepared with California freshness and innovation. We started with champagne (obviously), then ordered some fresh guacamole and margaritas (because #SundayFunday). From there, we split the shrimp cocktail (with jumbo Mexican prawns) and the Ahi Poke Tower (with South Pacific ahi sashimi, avocado, jicama and delicious chili-lime chips). I was stuffed before we could even get to an entree (which I've tried those before, and they're epic as well) but we couldn't turn down the Berry Tostada (fresh berries in an almond Florentine shell with vanilla ice cream and fruit liqueur). If you follow me on Snapchat (blonde_atlas) you'll understand why #YouCan'tBeASkinnyTravelBlogger. I'm okay with it.

Las Brisas is sincerely one of my favorite restaurants of all time and I can't recommend it enough. But I'm not the only one with this opinion so call ahead or book a reservation online.

URTH CAFFE

urth caffee laguna beach

Urth Caffe is one of my favorite California breakfast spots. Back when I worked at an ad agency based in LA, I'd start my mornings at the Santa Monica location (so when our friend Kelsey told us to meet her at the one in Laguna I was totally on board.) No matter which location you visit, you're sure to find healthy, fresh food in a quintessential California setting.

BANZAI BOWLS

banzai bowls laguna beach

California KILLS the açai bowl game. We made a pit stop at Banzai Bowls in Laguna for lunch before heading to the lookout on Oak street to soak in these views. Gracie had a Pitaya Bowl and I had the traditional Banzai Bowl (both were awesome). Stop in for a quick, healthy lunch or snack for the perfect break from a day at the beach.

THE CLIFF

If you're looking for a place to have a drink and soak in the views of Laguna, look no further than The Cliff. This relaxed atmosphere offers stunning panoramic views of the beach and has some delicious cocktails and appetizers to enjoy while you pass the time. Their guacamole hit the spot and made us happy campers.

LOS ANGELES

After your time in Laguna, hop on the 405 North to Los Angeles. This city is HUGE and has way more to offer than I could even begin to dive into in a single blog post. So again... sticking to the greatest hits here.

STAY:

HOTEL ANGELENO

HOTEL ANGELENO LOS ANGELES
hotel angeleno los angeles brentwood

If you’ve ever been to LA, you know it’s a sprawling metropolis (and can take a while to get from point A to point B with traffic.) I loved staying at Hotel Angeleno in Brentwood (which is conveniently located between Santa Monica and West Hollywood, so if feels central to a lot of the places I recommend). They've been undergoing a huge renovation and the new rooms are incredible (My favorite part? Remote blackout shades all from the simple touch of a button so you can sleep in pitch black any time of day). Head up to the roof for dinner + drinks at West for sweeping views of the city, delicious food, and awesome service (and be sure to order the brussels- they're fantastic!)

Hotel staff is always a huge factor to consider, and these guys were awesome and extremely accommodating. Aside from being kind and hospitable, they went out of their way to showcase room features and be sure we had everything we need. I have no doubt that they provide a wonderful stay to everyone who visits them.

EAT + DRINK

LEMONADE

Casual, cafeteria style dining but with delicious, healthy and unique options. Lemonade is one of my staple lunch spots in LA (and they even have a location in LAX, which was super convenient when we landed at 8pm PST and were starving). Be sure to order the cucumber mint lemonade, or another yummy flavor while you're there!

GRACIAS MADRE

Hands down one of the coolest places I've been in LA. Gracias Madre serves Mexican food comprised of locally grown organic ingredients (as well as the most delicious snow cone margaritas you've ever had in your life). Not to mention, the ambiance is killer.

ALFRED {COFFEE}

If you're looking for delicious coffee (or matcha) to start your day, be sure to check out Alfred {Coffee} on Melrose (although they have multiple locations, I'm told this one is the best). The vibes are way cool, the coffee and matcha are delicious (I had both) and they also have lots of great snacks and breakfast treats.

MALIBU FARM

This was hands down the most delicious (and nutritious) meal I've had in LA. Obviously, Malibu is a dream so the views will take your breath away, but so will the food. The cauliflower crust pizza, salmon niçoise salad and the burger all get an A+ in my book (so do the cocktails).

BUNGALOW

One of my long time favorites in Santa Monica is Bungalow (part of the Fairmont Hotel). This breezy, Baja-style cottage has awesome decor and pretty much all the chill vibes you can imagine (think surf boards, ping pong tables, and a beach view). I love coming here for margaritas during happy hour-- I think I could do it just about every single day.

Southern California is FILLED with wonderful things to do and you'll have no problem planning a trip wherever you go and however long you stay. If you have any further questions about booking details, shoot me a note! theblondeatlas@gmail.com

Why Now, More Than Ever, Is The Time To Travel.

travel

We're no stranger to the tragic news headlines that haunt society. The growing list of cities like Paris, Brussels, and Istanbul that have been hit with senseless terrorist attacks is enough to make anyone feel deep sadness or burning anger. And I’d agree—feeling either of those emotions is perfectly justified. But while letting human feelings emerge, let’s also be mindful to not give way to one of them: fear.

You see, I’m a traveler. My heart skips a beat every time I feel those airplane wheels leave a runway. One of my browser tabs will always be a map plotting my next adventure. And it pains me that one of the first things I seem to notice every time one of these tragedies strike is the fear driven comments that people make about my upcoming trips.

“Be careful. Airports are scary places these days."

“Keep your head on a swivel."

“Are you sure you still want to go? I’d reconsider if I were you."

Don’t get me wrong. I’m no stranger to fear. I’ve had my fair share of middle of the night tossing and turning about big projects, tense arguments, or health scares. But please, please, don't be afraid of traveling.

SFO international airport

I could offer lots of reasons why you shouldn’t be. For starters, the motives behind these attacks have proven they could happen anywhere, to any of us. I’d argue you’re not really safe anywhere (though it may not make you feel any better). On top of that, we live in an advertising driven society. News organizations know that the more clicks they can drive, or the more views they can get, the more money they rake in. And the more that our fear grows, the more likely we’ll keep a very watchful eye for well-informed updates (insert ever-growing clicks).

But let’s put those points aside. And please hear me when I say I’m not belittling the serious weight of these attacks or denying that they’re a big deal—because they are. I realize there is serious darkness that exists among us. My heart breaks for the lost lives of mothers, children, husbands, friends—all gone too soon.

But while evil exists, I believe love abounds even more. And so halting our travel experience does not save us from any evil, but only robs us of the joy we can receive and the love we can spread when we do.

Travel is a vital teacher. It reveals that meeting people with opposing ideas does not have to be dangerous, scary or divisive. It reminds us we’re all connected, all human, and more often than not, all kind at heart.

When I went to France for the first time, I was lost in Marseille trying to find a market to pick up some lavender products to bring home. It was Bastille Day, and most of the stores were closed (just my luck). I asked a man in the streets (who didn’t speak any English) for help. And after a few minutes of genuine effort (and a whole lot of unofficial sign language) he managed to point me in the right direction before parting ways with a warm smile.

I don’t know how that man and I were similar or different in regards to our religious beliefs, incomes, or any other debatable issue. But that day I was reminded that no wall, even a language barrier, can hide the light of human decency and kindness.

That is what happens when we travel. And so if we stop, we give into fears that lead us into hiding from one other. We feed the giant lie that is “us verses them,” whoever “they” may be.

I, for one, don’t want to live in a world of cowards. I want to live among people who are brave—who believe the best in one another. Who believe that love will always win over evil. Who are willing to learn more about the world and all the fascinating people who inhabit it.

We mustn't let fear dictate how we live our lives. I love to travel and I refuse to let anyone ever take that away from me. And so even if all the critics are right about their fears, even if I should be afraid, even if it’s incredibly reckless and stupid of me to continue traveling around the globe, I won’t stop. Because I’d rather live a life filled with all the wonder and delight that travel evokes than to spend an eternity snuggled up warm, yet terribly bored, in my comfort zone.

Napa Valley Travel Guide

NAPA VALLEY TRAVEL GUIDE

Ever since I first started appreciating wine, I’ve dreamed of visiting Napa Valley. While I knew it would be stunningly beautiful and someplace I'd love, I also anticipated a sense of pretension. I mean, can you blame me? Napa is home to some of the best wine in the entire world (we’re talking serious epicurean knowledge). But I couldn't have been more wrong. I had nothing but kind and hospitable encounters everywhere we went and there truly wasn't a single moment where I wasn't impressed.

While there are still tons of places I want to go back and experience that I didn't have time for this trip, I've pulled together everything you need to plan your own Napa Valley getaway that's sure to be unforgettable.

STAY

NAPA VALLEY MARRIOTT HOTEL & SPA

napa marriott
napa marriott champagne welcome
napa marriott champagne

Regardless of where you decide to stay in Napa, remember that these wineries are spread out across sprawling estates (not condensed city blocks designed for walking everywhere). Be responsible and arrange transportation for all tastings (cabs, Uber, or private car services). With that said, I was so happy with Marriott Napa Valley's location and proximity to everything. We were close to downtown Napa, Yountville (one of my favorite towns!) and all the wineries we chose to visit.

Once we arrived, I was even more pleased and so impressed with the attention to detail and hospitable staff that greeted us (in all sincerity, everyone went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and taken care of).

Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa was, and will continue to be a premier Napa Valley oasis that I highly recommend for your visit.

EAT

BOUCHON

World renown Chef Thomas Keller opened Bouchon, offering authentic French bistro fare with unfailing attention to detail in both ingredients and presentation. Their seasonal menu and raw bar selections change throughout the year, while staples like roast chicken, leg of lamb, and trout amandine remain as consistent, year-round favorites. The Vin en Carafe program at Bouchon features selections made exclusively for the restaurant from top wineries in Napa Valley and France.

Bouchon has consistently received the highest of accolades from both the food industry and international press ever since it opened (including being awarded a Michelin Star). Which is why I didn't skip a beat to try as many dishes as possible (including my first taste of escargot-- which I actually loved!) But my favorite part was that their impressive reputation didn't stand in the way of fantastic service. We were greeted with complimentary champagne and sent off after a celebratory birthday dessert. All of our questions were answered knowledgeably without the slightest hint of pretentiousness. I loved everything about our dinner experience there and would definitely go back.

BOUCHON BAKERY

bouchon bakery

Just next door to Bouchon Bistro, Chef Thomas Keller opened the doors of his first Bouchon Bakery. Located in Yountville, California, Bouchon Bakery was first conceived as a way to provide these restaurants with one-of-a-kind breads. Quickly, the bakery blossomed into an important establishment in its own right. In the style of classic French boulangeries, the bakery features a wide selection of artisanal breads and classic desserts inspired by Chef Keller’s memories of life in France, as well as his own childhood in the United States.

Pastry chef Nicholas Bonamico makes an array of sweet delights including classic Viennoiserie, such as croissants and pain au chocolat, breakfast items like muffins and coffee cakes as well as an ever-changing selection of tarts, cookies and other treats (we left with enough macarons to feed a small army). The bakery also offers a full range of espresso drinks and coffee, custom-blended by Chef Keller’s longtime partner Equator Coffee Roasters. You can also enjoy a full meal with savory items like sandwiches, soup, salads and quiche. Be warned that this gem is no secret, so you can expect a line out the door starting before they even open (but it's worth it!)

R+D KITCHEN

R+D Kitchen is a local favorite in the heart of Napa Valley and offers crisp and flavorful dishes in a quintessential indoor-outdoor space. We sat in adirondack chairs by fire pits outside for happy hour before moving indoors for dinner, which makes sense because R+D is inspired by California's indoor/outdoor culture with spaces that are light filled and intimate in feel. The Thai Tuna Roll was arguably the best sushi I've ever eaten, and I still dream about their Cashew Kale Salad.

OXBOW PUBLIC MARKET

Located in the vibrant Oxbow District in downtown Napa, Oxbow Public Market is the community gathering place for great food and wine. It's where both locals and visitors connect and there's always something  happening -- live music, cooking demos, wine and beer tastings, or the farmers market. It's where you can find local, artisanal ingredients -- the same ingredients the best Napa Valley restaurants use -- from meat to fish, cheese, charcuterie, organic produce, fresh baked bread, olive oil and more. We stopped in on our way out of town for our caffeine fix at Ritual Coffee and breakfast at Model Bakery (both were fantastic!)

DRINK

ARTESA

artesa winery napa
artesa winery

Artesa was our first stop in Napa, and I can't think of a more stunning setting to kick off our trip. The sweeping views from the estate are enough to take your breath away. We were greeted with delicious Cava (which we learned got it's name from the roots of Artesa's Spanish winemaking family Codorníu Raventós) and a private tour of the grounds to learn about the winery's history. It opened in 1991 as Codorníu Napa, later renamed Artesa – which is Catalan for “handcrafted” – in 1997, and has since become a leading producer of artisan wines from the varietals for which Carneros and Napa Valley are best known: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. They handcraft their wines from single vineyard blocks, treating them individually and keeping them separate throughout the winemaking process. All the wines we tasted were incredible (although my personal favorites were the Chardonnay Estate Reserve and the Codorniu Grand Reserve Brut Rosé.) Schedule a tour of your own, or pop in for a tasting to drink up the view (and a variety of delicious wine).

The Domaine Carneros grounds are so beautiful, you could sit and admire them for hours.  Pair with their delicious sparkling wine flights (my favorite was their Brut Rosé) and you'll stay even longer. We had the best time sitting on the patio and drinking it all in. Reservations are required, so call or book online in advance.

domaine chandon

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely seen or tried Chandon at some point in your life. This winery was established in 1973 by Moët et Chandon as the first French-owned sparkling wine producer in Napa Valley. It's no secret that champagne should only be called so if it was grown in the Champagne region of France (which Moët et Chandon is). So abiding by the appropriate nomenclature, Chandon prides themselves as a premium "sparkling wine" maker. We had such a fantastic time touring the grounds and learning about the entire process from growing to sipping. I would have thought that since I could purchase such widely distributed product anywhere that there was no need to buy anything during my visit, but they have such a variety of delicious reserve bottles that you can only get on site. I came home with a bottle of the winery exclusive Sparkling Red to save for a special holiday and the étoile Tête de Cuvée I'll pop for another celebratory occasion someday.

You can choose from a variety of tastings, but I highly recommend the private tour for a more intimate and informative experience. Book online or call to schedule.

charles krug

Charles Krug was a Prussian immigrant who established his winery in 1861 (now under the ownership of the Mondavi family) and has been producing the finest handcrafted Bordeaux varietals in Napa for over 70 years now. They own 850 acres of prime Napa Valley land (located in St. Helena, Yountville, Carneros appellations and on Howell Mountain.) We went for a private tour of the cellar and a Reserve Flight Tasting (which included 5 fantastic reserve red wines). My favorite bottle that I brought home was their 2012 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (which you can only find at the winery and a few select restaurants). Walk in tastings are welcome, however for the full experience book a tour in advance

v. sattui winery

Sattui Winery is located on a 38-acre organically farmed vineyard in St. Helena, and produces more than 60 different highly rated wines from 20 different varieties of grapes.

Every V. Sattui bottle is sold directly from the Winery, from their website or via the Wine Club (you won't find wines sold in stores anywhere else!) My absolute favorite was the 2012 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon (which was recently awarded as "Wine of the Year").

V. Sattui Winery offers a consistently welcoming, delicious and authentic Wine Country experience for all guests and is the ideal Napa Valley destination for picnics, wedding and events. We loved meeting the staff + snacking on the delicious artisan cheese plate they curated for us during our tasting! Walk ins are welcome, but book a tour for the full experience.

One of the most unforgettable experiences of our entire trip was our sunrise hot air balloon ride with Napa Valley Aloft. Waking up before the sun on vacation feels somewhat counterintuitive, but you'll forget all about it the moment you take off. Our pilot Jay was one of the most fascinating people I've ever met, and he made our hour long flight so fun. I could go on and on about why you should put this at the top of your list, but I'll just let the pictures speak on my behalf. Just do yourself a favor and book your flight now

Napa exceeded any expectation I could have ever imagined. I was blown away by how kind, hospitable, and down to earth the people were. I was overwhelmed by all the beautiful scenery and delicious food + wine that was available. And I left with some of the most special and unforgettable memories with my best friends. I have every intention of planning more trips back in the future and can't recommend enough why you should pay a visit of your own.

Thanks so much to Visit Napa Valley and the other fantastic partners (Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa, Artesa Winery, Napa Valley Aloft, Domaine Chandon, V.Sattui and Charles Krug) for A WONDERFUL TRIP!
