New Orleans Travel Guide

NEW ORLEANS TRAVEL GUIDE

I've heard some wild stories about New Orleans. Who hasn't?  But if I'm being perfectly honest, I was guilty of letting those tales mold my overall thoughts toward the city (which I had never visited) to be ones that I turned my nose up to a bit. In my mind, New Orleans was a dirty place in a perpetual state of Mardis Gras and debauchery.

But I also heard wonderful things about it: that it was rich in history, brimming with beautiful architecture, and home to some of the best restaurants around. These attributes intrigued me, and I decided it was time I experience it myself. So I set out with my friend Danica for a weekend getaway to explore all the great things I had heard so much about.

I left Nashville with dozens of unanswered emails and missed deadlines hanging over my shoulders that I was sure would haunt me all weekend. And while I didn't doubt we would have fun, I never anticipated to have as much fun as we did. But living up to it's proverbial title of "The Big Easy", it's like there's something in the water that transforms you into a more easy-going way of life the moment you arrive. I didn't think about any of those emails for a second.

From it's delicious food, to it's bluesy jazz music, to the stunning architecture at every turn, New Orleans romanced me all weekend long.  I fell in love with so much about it that I legitimately had trouble shaving down my recommendation list below (and I know wasn't able to hit all the great places it has to offer in my short time). But I hope that whatever you choose to do during your time in New Orleans, you'll find it to be just as wonderful as I did.

CATAHOULA BOUTIQUE HOTEL

catahoula boutique hotel new orleans

I love all kinds of hotels, but there's something about discovering a great boutique hotel that makes my heart pitter-patter, and The Catahoula Hotel was no exception. Their philosophy is simple: to keep it casual, cozy, and above all, human. The style of hospitality isn't flashy or exclusive, nor is it predictable or contrived. The building was once a home, and that's what drives their ethos – to welcome guests as they would someone into their own home, to care for them and do whatever it takes to ensure their time with us is as memorable as possible.

If you're looking for a place to stay that's conveniently located downtown (we walked everywhere), competitively priced, and more unique than your standard hotel, then you'll love staying at Catahoula (I also swooned over their open-air showers- straight outta someone's Pinterest board).

INTERNATIONAL HOUSE HOTEL

If you're looking for a chic, design-forward hotel where every detail feels like a luxury (like fresh lemon infused water and delicious illy coffee available in the lobby) then be sure to look into International House Hotel. Also conveniently located downtown, IHH reflects a contemporary New Orleans style that I loved. The staff was incredibly hospitable, provided us with great recommendations, and did everything in their power to ensure we had a great stay. And the bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in that I can remember (slept like a baby).

EAT

GALATOIRE'S

GALATOIRE'S NEW ORLEANS RESTAURANTS
galatoire's new orleans seafood ettouffe
GALATOIRE'S NEW ORLEANS FRENCH 75

Galatoire's was our very first stop when we arrived in town, and it set the bar high. This New Orleans staple was founded in 1905 by Jean Galatoire, who brought recipes and traditions from Pardies, France to create their menu and ambiance of the internationally-renowned restaurant.

Start with a French 75 and some appetizers: the Galatoire Goute (crabmeat maison and shrimp remoulade) and Oysters Rockefeller (the best oysters I've ever had) are a delicious assortment of seafood with a New Orleans touch. If you're feeling adventurous (which I have been a lot these days) try a cup of the Turtle Soup au Sherry. For your main course, I recommend the Shrimp Etouffée (when in NOLA), but be sure to save room for dessert. Order the Caramel Cup Custard, but then be sure to ask for the "coffee special" (not on the menu).  I'll save the surprise so you still get a wow factor, but if you dislike fire or alcohol then I'd stick with Starbucks for your post-meal caffeine.

COMPÈRE LAPIN

compere lapin cocktails new orleans
compere lapin new orleans
compere lapin new orleans restaurant

Top Chef Nina Compton started Compère Lapin in the Warehouse Arts District in New Orleans, and we can all be glad she did. The inspiration for the menu comes from the traditional Caribbean folktales featuring a mischievous rabbit named Compère Lapin that Compton read during her childhood in St. Lucia (and you'll find the brilliantly-marketed rabbit all over the restaurant and menu). Drawing on the story's themes of exploration and play, she mixes the indigenous ingredients and rich culinary heritage of New Orleans with those of her Caribbean roots.

Start with the Crispy Dirty RIce Arancini (with chicken livers, house made sausage + fontina). Then move on to the Marinated Shrimp / Roasted Jalapeno Jus with bell peppers, red onions + cilantro (insanely delicious) and the Cold Smoked Tuna Tartare with Avocado, Crispy Bananas +  Caviar (even more insanely delicious). For the main course, try the Duo of Beef / Pan Seared Sirloin + Braised Short Rib withEnglish Peas, Carrots and shaved Foie Gras (did I mention I'm definitely not a vegetarian anymore?) Finish your meal with the Roasted Banana Zeppole with Rum Caramel or Lime Cheesecake with Mango Granita and Cashe Krokant. Oh, and then get a Miami Vice to go (because you can do that in New Orleans... #BestCityEver).

Compère Lapin was easily one of my favorite meals in New Orleans, our wait staff was incredibly knowledgable and warm, and the atmosphere was perfect. Be sure to make a reservation during your trip so you can experience it for yourself.

WILLA JEAN

willa jean crawfish biscuit new orleans restaurant

Willa Jean is a contemporary bakery in the Central Business District in downtown New Orleans, and served me one of the most indulgent brunches I've ever had in my life. The bakery adds a modern and elegant touch to iconic southern food that anyone with a savory-loving pulse will adore. And they specialize in my favorite vice: carbohydrates. Biscuits. Banana bread. Corn bread. Desserts. Pastries. It's all incredible. And if you're one of those terribly annoying people who's trying to be healthy, they even have a delicious avocado toast option for you. Or, you can be like me, and try everything on the dessert menu. I know which option is more fun.

JOSEPHINE ESTELLE

Inside the new Ace Hotel, Josephine Estelle combines the philosophy of Italian cuisine with the flavors of the American South. Embracing it's Italian background, I recommend starting with Guanciale Meatballs. And representing the American South? Those Brussels Sprouts, though...

They also offer a wide variety of delicious cocktails and wines, and seal the experience with killer ambiance. Whether you visit for Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner or Brunch on the weekend- you won't be disappointed.

KENTON'S

Head a little outside of the downtown chaos over to Magazine Street, and you'll find Kenton's- an American whiskey bar and restaurant. Their menu is filled with smoked, grilled, and charred flavors that have an affinity for bourbon. To capitalize on all those delicious flavors, I opted to forgo the traditional set lunch menu and instead, try a chef's tasting instead (which I highly recommend). Everything was delicious and I loved taking our time because the restaurant's aesthetic was incredible.

DRINK + DO

ALTO AT ACE HOTEL

ALTO AT ACE HOTEL NEW ORLEANS COCKTAILS

Head to the roof of Ace Hotel and you'll find yourself at ALTO, their rooftop garden featuring poolside dining, cocktails, and panoramic city views. We met Josh, the manager, for drinks and opted to let him order for us.  Naturally, he gave us a taste of their take on a New Orleans staple: frozen drinks. Both options were delicious (although I preferred their play on a bramble with blackberries and gin- called Purple Rain). No matter what you order, you're sure to love your drink and dig the vibes.

CANE AND TABLE NEW ORLEANS BOSS COLADA

All the cocktails I tried at Cane & Table were fantastic. I opted for the Boss Colada (which was obvi the most Instagram worthy- duh). I was slightly nervous it would be too sweet for my palate, but they did an incredible job of blending and complimenting ingredients so that everything was delicious. If you can, sit outside because the patio is all kinds of dreamy.

SALON BY SUCRÉ

After a long day of shooting content, exploring, and drinking (all before 2pm) we stopped in Salon by Sucré in the heart of the French Quarter... to drink some more. But I fell in love with their picture-perfect ambiance, delicious desserts and courtyard views. Take a load off and enjoy a treat for your eyes and your tastebuds.

CAFÉ BEIGNET

I couldn't leave New Orleans without trying beignets (carbs are my love language- remember?) Everyone raves about Cafe Du Monde- which while delicious in taste, I (personally) find somewhat lacking in atmosphere. I opted to indulge at Café Beignet instead. The beignets were outrageously delicious, the ambiance was cozy and quaint, and there weren't nearly as many tourists. You do you- I'll be over here indulging in the cutest little cafe I've ever laid eyes on.

SHOP ON MAGAZINE STREET

NEW ORLEANS SHOPPING MAGAZINE STREET AZBYS
new orleans french quarter travel guide

Magazine Street is a six-mile long stretch from the Garden District to Uptown New Orleans, and features some of the best antique stores, art galleries, craft shops, and boutiques to be found anywhere in the city. My favorite? Azby's (across from Whole Foods). This one-stop shop has everything from evening wear to casual wear (all my outfits featured in this post came from there).

CITY SURF FITNESS

Every vice I indulged in during my time in New Orleans was absolutely worth it. But I did start to feel pretty terrible toward the end of our trip. So in attempt to make up for the immense damage we had done, we went to City Surf for a sweat session- and I'm so glad we did. I grew up spending summers surfing (as best as a Nashvillian could) in San Diego, and it was so fun to be back on a board (even if it was on bosu balls instead of in the actual water).

City Surf offers a wide-variety of classes, pulling inspiration from barre, yoga, spin, bootcamp and more. We took Becky's Beach Body Bootcamp and loved it. It takes a little getting used to at first to balance, but is fun the entire time. And when you're done? Total validation to reward yourself with some more vices.

TIPITINA'S

TIPITINAS NEW ORLEANS JAZZ BAR

Ending up at Tipitina's wasn't on my original travel itinerary (hence my extremely professional photoshoot aka saved Snapchat) but I'm sure glad it happened. At the time, I wasn't as concerned about note taking and providing well informed travel feedback for all of you, as I was dancing to awesome jazz music and enjoying my buzz (sorry about that). But it was one of the most fun nights I've had in a while, so I won't let the lack of stellar content keep anyone else from experiencing the same. Check it out and thank me later.

Overall, I was blown away by not only how beautiful New Orleans is, but how fun (no matter what fun looks like to you). The city has so much to do that I didn't even touch on, and you're sure to have a great trip no matter what's on your itinerary.  If you have any questions about planning a trip of your own, talk to my friends at Visit New Orleans or shoot me a note at theblondeatlas@gmail.com.

ASHEVILLE TRAVEL GUIDE
asheville north carolina mountains blue ridge

For years, I've heard all kinds of people rave about Asheville: beer lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, epicurean aficionados - the list goes on. I strive to be at least 2 out of those 3 (wine will forever be my first love) so I decided it was time I finally experience Asheville for myself. From the moment I arrived, I fell in love with everything about this quaint little mountain town, and was blown away by how much there was to do there. I basically ate and drank non-stop for 72 hours (it's a tough job, but someone's gotta do it) and put together this guide of my favorite places to help you plan a trip of your own.

STAY

THE WINDSOR ASHEVILLE

windsor boutique hotel asheville nc
windsor boutique hotel asheville NC

When you travel as much as I do, hotel rooms can start to feel stuffy and cold, (not complaining- I'd still sign up for it any day) but I loved what a breath of fresh air The Windsor was. It had the beauty of a luxury hotel, but felt warm and homey like an apartment would.  Asheville has come to be known for its art scene (living up to it's title of "Paris of the South") and The Windsor certainly has no shortage of it. Whether the artwork has been shipped in from Parisian antique markets, or sourced locally from the artists (which are also available for purchase) it's all hand selected and curated by the hotel's Art Director. In fact, just about every detail of the hotel has been carefully thought out (from chocolates on the pillows, to local coffee and soaps) so that you're sure to experience as much from local Asheville artisans before you even leave your room.

Overall, the staff was incredibly hospitable, the location is ideal for exploring the best of Asheville by foot, and the experience is unique from most everything else .

Just a couple blocks over from The Windsor, you'll find the Renaissance. This is another great lodging option if you prefer to forgo the intimate boutique setting for a more traditional hotel experience that most of us are used to. The staff was great, the interior was pristine and waking up looking over the Blue Ridge mountains made it nearly impossible to get out of bed in the morning (so I didn't for a while... #vacation).

EAT

RHUBARB

Rhubarb was our first stop when we pulled into Asheville, and it set the bar for the weekend high. Their executive chef John Fleer was named one of the “Rising Stars of the 21st Century” by the James Beard Foundation and is a three-time finalist for the James Beard “Best Chef in the Southeast” award. The atmosphere was beautiful and the entire menu was enticing (I went with the Wood Roasted Whole Sunburst Trout with farro, shallots, charred sunchokes and lemon sherry vinaigrette -and loved it).

SOVERIGN REMEDIES

We met Charlie, the owner of Sovereign Remedies, for some drinks before dinner and it was easily one of my favorite places we visited in Asheville. The ambiance was a perfect balance of elegant and relaxed, and their pimento cheese puffs rocked my world. But the real star was their delicious cocktails (my favorites were The Viva Rhu and the Wet Hot American Winter). They even have a pre-hangover tonic to keep you going strong all night (milk thistle, tumeric, alfalfa, evening primrose, prickly pear, shatavari and coconut water). Worked like a charm.

the nightbell restaurant asheville

Nightbell is a contemporary American small plate restaurant with a craft cocktail bar and lounge. The menu is a blend of comfort food and inventive twists on the classics (all with a serious commitment to local farmers and sustainable products). Bartenders create ever-changing concoctions using seasonal ingredients and hand-carved ice. The atmosphere is dim and romantic with eclectic vintage-inspired decor, reminiscent of Asheville’s Art Deco heritage. I loved everything we ate, but don't leave without trying their Deviled Egg (served in the shell), Grilled Maitake Mushroom or Hamachi Crudo.

CURATE TAPAS BAR ASHEVILLE

Cúrate transported me back to my time in Spain last summer with their lively tapas bar traditions. The name Cúrate literally means ‘cure yourself’ in Spanish. They believe in the curative effects of sharing good food and wine with family and friends (can I get an Amen?) I let our server surprise us by placing our order, and he did an incredible job because I loved everything I tried. My favorite dish was the combination of cerdo ibérico a las finas hierbas (100% pure ibérico pork, “skirt steak” with fresh rosemary and thyme) paired with setas al jerez ( mushrooms sautéed in olive oil with a splash of sherry).

TOP OF THE MONK

top of the monk asheville cocktail

Top of the Monk prides themselves in presenting you with nothing but the best quality cocktails, so you won't find a food menu here. They put their focus into freshly squeezed juices and create their own bitters, tinctures, infusions, drams, flavored syrups and shrubs. They're also a members only club (North Carolina state law requires it if you only serve alcohol without food). The good news is that a lifetime membership is only $1. And the "no food" part is only half true, because with each cocktail, you're given a key to unlock a treat from an old PO Box- genius. The location is prime and the patio has sweeping views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

SKYBAR

If the weather is nice, don't miss grabbing a drink from Skybar- a rooftop bar with panoramic views of Asheville, the Blue Ridge Mountains, and everything in between.

ALSO TRY:

OVEREASY (delicious brunch and juice selection).

BILTMORE ESTATE

BILTMORE ESTATE ASHEVILLE NORTH CAROLINA

The Biltmore is one of the most iconic landmarks in Asheville, and for good reason. The Vanderbilt family’s 250-room French Renaissance chateau is a true marvel, the largest undertaking in residential architecture. The property has more history than I could even begin to touch on, and you could spend the entire day soaking it all in. If the history is what fascinates you, there are a variety of tours to choose from. If you're like me, there's wine tasting. Regardless of your reason for visiting, you're sure to be impressed.

ALSO VISIT:

WICKED WEED (killer patio, food, and a wide variety of beers to taste).

BATTERY PARK BOOK EXCHANGE (bookstore meets champagne bar- aka heaven).

KAREN DONATELLI (stop in for an Americano and croissant for breakfast or a mid-day pick-me-up).

ASHEVILLE MARKET BASKET (European Dry Goods Store that'll make your traveller's heart pitter-patter).

Asheville is an awesome town with tons to see, eat and do. No matter what the occasion for visiting or what you're in the mood for, you're bound to be satisfied with what they have to offer. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Nashville Travel Guide

NASHVILLE TRAVEL GUIDE

Being a Nashville native, this is one of the most daunting posts I've ever written. As a traveler, having a handful of positive experiences about a destination is enough to equip you with confidence about the recommendations you provide. But as a native to one of the most popular destinations in the country right now? I feel immense pressure to carefully curate the most ideal list given my knowledge about the area.  So let me start by caveating that this doesn't include everything to do in this wonderful city (it's a blog post not a book, people) but I did my best to provide crowd pleasers in every neighborhood as a starting point. So over the last few weeks, I played tourist in my own town, arranged a few staycations, and pulled together this guide of some of my favorite places for you to visit in Music City.

DOWNTOWN

STAY:

506 LOFTS

506 lofts Nashville
506 lofts nashville tennessee
506 lofts nashville tennessee
506 lofts nashville tn

506 Lofts is a five-unit boutique hotel in downtown Nashville. The 130 year old building has been a department store, a mensware store, and an Asian restaurant. During construction, maintaining as much original work as possible was a top priority in an effort to restore the building while preserving its history. I went for a staycation with my friend Sarah, and we loved everything about our unit. But my favorite part of 506 Lofts is what they stand for. They belive strongly in Luke 12:48, "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked." To that end; the owner created a program called Rooms for Rooms which ensures no stay at 506 Lofts happens without helping someone in need. For every stay, they donate 5% to the surrounding Nashville homeless shelters (Room in the Inn and Nashville Rescue Mission). Therefore, those without a home are able to find a places to stay due to your stay at 506 lofts. The pictures speak for themselves, but it truly is a beautiful property and in a killer location if you want to be in the heart of downtown.

EAT:

PINEWOOD SOCIAL

Pinewood is a great place no matter what you're looking for at any time of the day. I often come for coffee and breakfast to work during the day or to grab cocktails at night. It goes far beyond your average restaurant, offering bowling, bocce ball, a swimming pool and private karaoke room.

DO:

ACME FEED & SEED

ACME FEED AND SEED
acme feed and seed

Being a local from Nashville, I'm guilty of having turned my nose up to Broadway because it's crawling with tourists (and if you are a tourist, you definitely should experience it- it's iconic). But Acme Feed & Seed is a bar on Broadway that anyone can genuinely enjoy.  This 3 story bar offers a different option at every level, and each one is tons of fun. For killer views of the city, head all the way to top and have a drink on the roof.

EAST NASHVILLE

STAY:

AIRBNB

east nashville airbnb
east nashville tn airbnb rental

East Nashville is an up and coming area with tons happening, but hotel options are extremely limited. There are tons of Airbnb listings to choose from, but I recently stayed at a friend's guest house that they list and I highly recommend it. The decor is insane and it's conveniently located to tons of great places on the East Side.

EAT:

MARCHÉ

Easily my favorite spot to grab brunch in town. The elegantly rustic setting creates a perfect ambiance for any occasion. Not only do they serve amazing food, but with a unique selection of goods from artisan producers. The menu utilizes local and seasonal products and changes seasonally, but everything I've ever ordered has been out of this world.

ROSEPEPPER

Rosepepper has one of the best patios in town and their margarita has been voted best in town for 11 years in a row now (you've also likely seen someone Instagram of their tounge-in-cheek marquee quotes). Go for lunch, dinner, or simply guacamole and margs on a pretty day and you'll be a happy camper.

MIDTOWN

STAY:

LOEWS VANDERBILT HOTEL

LOEWS VANDERBILT HOTEL NASHVILLE
loews vanderbilt hotel

If you're looking for a more classic hotel experience, check out Loews Vanderbilt on West End. Every detail has been carefully thought through, so that when you check in your mind can check out. The time I spent there during one of my staycations was some of the most relaxing I've had in a long time.

EAT:

LE SEL

nashville restaurant le sel french midtown

The atmosphere at Le Sel will make you swoon (took me back to when I fell in love with sketch in London). I love their brunch, dinner and cocktail selection. No matter what time of day you go, the vibe is always on point and you'll totes get a good Insta pic (insert sassy emoji).

DO:

CENTENNIAL PARK

CENTENNIAL PARK PICNIC NASHVILLE
CENTENNIAL PARK PICNIC NASHVILLE TN

A Nashville staple for a walk in the park (and epic views of our Parthenon). If you're lucky enough to be in town on a Saturday in the moderate seasons, be sure to check out Musicians Corner for a showcase of Nashville's finest independent singer songwriters.

GERMANTOWN

STAY:

AIRBNB

Also a fantastic place to stay, but limited on hotels so check out Airbnb to find a spot that's right for your group.

EAT:

BUTCHERTOWN HALL

This place is a guaranteed crowd pleaser. I like to avoid gender stereotypes, but it's been my personal experience that ladies love the beautiful esthetic of this restored church-now-restaurant, and guys love the wide variety of (delicious) meat options. They also have one of my personal favorite margaritas in town.

5TH & TAYLOR

Probably my favorite restaurant in town right now. The atmosphere is sure knock your socks off, the food is delicious, and the cocktails are always on point (try the cucumber gimlet and you'll see what I mean).

SILO

I have lots of wonderful things I could say about Silo, but I will save my breath and simply say this. Do not leave without getting the mac and cheese. I repeat: do NOT leave, without trying the mac and cheese. It will change your life.

DO:

TEMPERED EUROPEAN INDULGENCE

Tempered Cafe & Chocolate, is a sweet and savory destination specializing in small batch artisan chocolates, light cafe fare, and fine wine & cheese pairings. Go on Thursday (8p-1a), Friday & Saturday (8p-3a) for Green Hour, when they serve signature cocktails and traditional absinthe drips (only when the green light in the window is lit.)

12 SOUTH

STAY:

AIRBNB

Another fantastic place to stay, but limited on hotels so check out Airbnb to find a spot that's right for your group.

EAT:

BURGER UP

There are lots of great burgers in town (which I'm just now discovering because I recently quit being a vegetarian- best decision ever). Burger Up has been one of my favorites so far.  The entire menu is moderately priced, farm to table, has great portion sizes, and is sure to please no matter what you order (I love both the burger and the kale salad).

BARTACO

bartaco nashville

Channeling my inner cali-girl, I love the vibe at bartaco. I went during a staycation with my friend Brenna a couple weeks ago, and echo her sentiments exactly (read her entire blog about our squad getaway here)

I love a spot where I can get something healthy or splurge and this place offers all of those options. The chopped salad, guacamole, and cauliflower, ribeye, and duck tacos are my favorite menu items and the sanguina cocktail might literally be my favorite cocktail of all time.

DO:

WHITE'S MERCANTILE

NASHVILLE FIELD GUIDE WHITES MERCANTILE
WHITES MERCANTILE 12 SOUTH

White's is one of my favorite boutiques in town. If I buy you a birthday card or gift, there is a 99% chance I got it here, because I'm a sucker for every item available for sale. They pride's themselves in being a general store for the modern-day tastemaker, and offer a wide variety of products. My friend Mille (aka Amelia Styles) and I recently teamed up to share some of our Nashville favorites each month on Instagram, and our outfits in the photos above and below all came from their store.

SEVIER PARK

SEVIER PARK NASHVILLE WHITES MERANTILE 12 S
SEVIER PARK NASHVILLE 12 SOUTH
SEVIER PARK NASHVILLE 12 SOUTH

Sevier is my favorite park in Nashville (I'm slightly biased because I live just up the road). It's filled with the local community doing life together every single day. You'll find families gathered around the swingsets while the kids play, couples laying on blankets together, runners with their dogs, and groups of friends playing games or hanging out (like my friends do every Sunday after church if the weather is right). When Nashville had our snow-pocalypse, everyone in the neighborhood seemed to flock to Sevier for massive sledding and snowball fights. It's truly one of those idyllic atmospheres that seems to come straight out of a movie and tug at your heartstrings.

The list above is hardly putting a dent in all Nashville has to offer, and I can assure this won't be the last time I post about the great city that I call home. But no matter what you do during your stay, I'm confident you'll fall in love with Nashville and will find yourself back again soon. I'll have more recommendations to share with you when you do.
