PALM SPRINGS TRAVEL GUIDE

Happy Tuesday! Today's post dives into Palm Springs--one of the favorite spots from my recent US road trip (and from photos alone it's not very hard to see why).

100 miles east of LA, Palm Springs was once the chic getaway of Rat Pack stars like Sinatra and Elvis back in the '50s and '60s. Today, over 3.5 million visitors come each year to enjoy the stunning desert set amongst the snow-capped mountains. While there's certainly plenty to see + do here to keep you busy for weeks, you'll likely find yourself slip into a easy-going state of mind from the moment you arrive that prompts you to simply relax.  But regardless of what you choose to do with your itinerary, it's impossible not to fall head over heels for this retro-chic town filled with natural beauty, impressive design and delicious food.

PACK

What you should pack really revolves around your itinerary (for example, your suitcase should look very different if you plan to fill your days with golf over lounging poolside). So rather than speaking to concrete items to add to your list, let's talk more about Palm Springs style. As previously mentioned, it's Rat-Pack history sets the tone for a town that's vibrant and retro chic. Couple that with the fact that the town's name literally has the word "Palm" in it, and it's pretty obvious that you can have fun with a few trends:

PALM PRINT

Call me cliché, but I couldn't resist rocking a palm print romper while in Palm Springs. There are so many fun palm products right now that I can't see why you wouldn't want bring some along.

COLOR POPS

It's no secret that Palm Springs has no shortage of bright colors. Let that mindset guide your packing by bringing along bold pops of color in everything from a romper to your bathing suit.

If you've never heard of The Saguaro Hotel (which I mention in my Scottsdale post) you're likely a bit behind on your reading, because it's been featured in Vogue, ELLE, Dwell, Refinery29 and Esquire (to name a few). Not big on reading online media? Well then you've likely noticed dozens and dozens of influencers posting photos here-- especially during festivals like Coachella or Stagecoach.  Regardless of  whether or not you've heard of it before, the important thing to note is that you know about it before you book your own trip to Palm Springs-- because staying here hands down made our trip as fun as it was. We spent so much of our time on the property, whether in our room, at the restaurant or especially at the pool (but more about that in a minute). While it's not the most luxurious hotel I've ever stayed in, it's definitely one of the most fun and truly unique.

The Saguaro offers a youthful + vibrant take on Palm Springs that's sure to make your trip a lot more fun-- we kept saying we felt like we were on "Adult Spring Break!" If you prefer someplace that's laid back + inclusive rather than extravagantly posh, look no further than The Saguaro.

Immediately when we arrived in Palm Springs, we went straight to Ace Hotel to dine at King's Highway. This property was once a mid-century desert modern former Westward Ho with a Denny's attached. They renovated it, gave it some love and today it's one of the most popular hotels (and restaurants) in Palm Springs.

King's Highway is a roadside diner, helmed by award-winning Chef Carlo Guaradado. It celebrates the bohemian spirit of the wide open West. The menu focuses deep on Chef Salgado's commitment to using heirloom ingredients and locally-sourced produce to create exceptional fare for desert diners. We pretty much had it all: tacos, burgers, salads, cocktails- you name it. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere was relaxed, retro and perfect for a "Welcome to Palm Springs" lunch.

TRIO PALM SPRINGS

For our first dinner we went to TRIO, also know by the locals as "Where Palm Springs Eats." This place was buzzing with energy and brimming with people (they were on a wait so be sure to make reservations if you want to avoid that). I can't say enough great things about our meal-- every detail from the service, to the food quality to the atmosphere was great. They serve brunch, lunch and dinner so you can go anytime of day. If you go at dinner like we did, I'd recommend trying some of our favorites. For starters, go with the Hand Cut Potato Chips or Seafood Cocktail. For entrées, either the Trio Mac and 5 Cheese, Pork Chop or Skirt Steak. And for drinks, be sure to try one of their signature cocktails (I loved the Spatini with cucumber vodka, lime juice + muddled cucumber).

No matter when you decide to visit, be sure to include TRIO on your Palm Springs itinerary for a guaranteed good time and delicious experience!

BIRBA PALM SPRINGS

Another favorite meal we had was our second dinner at an al fresco Italian restaurant: Birba. From the moment we walked into the outdoor garden space (which is surrounded by fichus trees strung with white lights) we were in love. Luckily, the food is just as wonderful as the beautiful atmosphere, offering a wide variety of cocktails + specialty pizzas. Probably my favorite part is that all pizzas have a cauliflower crust option (that's actually quite delicious) so you can still feel like you're splurging without the overload of carbohydrates. Regardless of your crust preference, these pizzas are sure to wow you with their creativity. Mine had Basil, Kale, White Corn, Leeks, Squash Blossom and Burrata (YUM). They had dozens of others (including  pistachio pesto, asparagus onion + artichoke or prosciutto, honey + chile oil ) that sounded incredible, which just gives me a reason to go back!

If pizza isn't your preference, Birba also prides itself on carefully curated dishes like ricotta gnocchi or Nonna's Meatballs (which are also delicious-- we had some for a starter!) Whatever you order, I can assure you Birba will not disappoint in the slightest and I highly recommend coming for dinner while in Palm Springs.

THE BROKEN YOLK CAFE

We had an awesome morning at The Broken Yolk - one of California's breakfast favorites. They had a huge selection of breakfast staples including over 20 types of omelettes, fresh squeezed orange juice + Mimosas-- all were delicious. If you're looking for a spot with plenty of options and healthy portion sizes to fuel your day, this is a great spot in the heart of Palm Springs I highly recommend!

POOL AT THE SAGUARO

As previously mentioned, we spent a ton of time at The Saguaro pool. This place has amazing vibes and feels like a quintessential Palm Springs party. Enjoy delicious cocktails, float in a variety of fun inflatables (which they provide for both you and your drink), enjoy the DJ playing music on the weekends or simply marvel at the snow-capped mountains in the distance while soaking up the sun. There are dozens of ways to fill your day with fun here and I loved all of them.

I know other hotels in the area also have great pools-- we just didn't experinece any others because why would we leave someplace so fun? If it ain't broke...

Pacific Beach: San Diego

PACIFIC BEACH CALIFORNIA

Happy Monday! Continuing my adventures from my recent US road trip, today I'm sharing about my time in San Diego. My family is from Encinitas, California- which is in the north county portion of San Diego. Because of that, my trips to this great city are almost always spent up there. Growing up, we went downtown for the occasional Padres game or trip to Sea World, but I've not spent much time as an adult exploring this neck of the woods. So when the opportunity arose to spend a few nights in Pacific Beach, I jumped at the chance.

You may be thinking "How different can two beach towns in San Diego be?" I would argue that they all have their own unique personality and feel totally different from one another- which makes it impossible to cover the city as a whole in one blog post. So today we're going to focus on Pacific Beach, where I spent a few days on my recent coast-to-coast road trip.

For those of you unfamiliar with Pacific Beach, this young beach town is the perfect destination if you're looking for surf + sand by day and bars or dancing by night. Because of its abundance of bars, restaurants + plentiful craft beer, Pacific Beach attracts a college-aged and young professionals crowd. But even among this fun, twenty-something crowd, you'll also notice a plethora of young families flocking here to enjoy the buzz of the beach, surf lessons, or strolling along the boardwalk. All in all, Pacific Beach is full of energy + beautiful San Diego beaches that everyone can enjoy.

For the best experience of Pacific Beach, you definitely want to stay somewhere along the boardwalk.  There's amazing people-watching here where you'll see joggers, inline skaters and cyclists year-round (think the upbeat energy of Venice Beach, but not nearly as wild or crazy). But the best part of having a hotel room along here is that you'll also have an ocean view. Enter Blue Sea Beach Hotel.

"Nestled right on the sand in Pacific Beach, San Diego, better known as “PB” by the locals, the Blue Sea Beach Hotel invites guests to their surf-chic haven built for plenty of fun in the California sun. With the only beachfront hotel pool in PB and 126 modern guest rooms and suites – many boasting stunning ocean views – this San Diego hotel on the beach is like no other."

As if the beach views weren't enough to win me over, the hotel rooms feature a 50” flat-screen TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, wet bars, and relaxing private balconies. Did I mention the heated, ocean view pool and spa? Yeah, they have that, too.

Aside from impressive features, I was genuinely impressed with how clean the entire property was. Not to mention the staff was incredibly helpful + welcoming; they pointed me to lots of great dining options nearby (although #confession, I still went to In-N-Out... gotta get it while I can!)

Overall, I had a great stay at Blue Sea Beach Hotel and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a high-quality hotel with competitive pricing in Pacific Beach!

Thanks to Blue Sea Beach for sponsoring my stay! All opinions are my own

I have one more nugget to share from my time in San Diego: While I loved spending a good bit of time in PB, I obviously had to venture up north to Encinitas, my home away from home (I share all my favorites from that area in my Southern California Travel Guide).  After watching all the surfers in Pacific Beach, it made me miss being out on the water. I took surf lessons as a kid, but hadn't been back out on a board in years. So I decided to give Kahuna Bob (the same guy who gave me lessons 15+ years ago!) a call and see if he had any openings while I was in town. Lucky for me, he did + invited me to join his afternoon surf lesson with some local kids.

A little background: Bob doesn't do much in the way of social media or online marketing. Partially, because he doesn't have to. He's been in the business for over 30 years and has had great success solely from word of mouth and local press he's received organically. I love how passionate he is about the sport, but I also loved that I was surrounded by local kids genuinely wanting to learn the sport- not just a bunch of tourists wanting a picture for Instagram.

Speaking of getting a photo, I clearly wasn't with a photographer this day or worrying about a styled blog shoot (which is abundantly obvious from the one photo I took below). Instead, I let myself enjoy being back in the water and catching some waves -- which thanks to some help from Bob, I caught seven!

Surfing is definitely something I think everyone should try at least once- but especially in beautiful San Diego. It both humbling + fun to let yourself do something that you're not good at every now and then. So thanks to Kahuna Bob for giving me another chance to remember that + giving me a great afternoon on the water.

If you're traveling to San Diego, I can't recommend a surf lesson with Bob enough. It will be one of the most fun things you'll do on your trip!

Ojai, California

ojai california

Happy Thursday! You may remember a recent trip I took to Ojai: a small town in Ventura County, California. Set in the Topatopa Mountain Valley, Ojai is brimming with beauty + charm. So much, in fact, you may find it hard to believe that's it's only one hour outside of chaotic LA.

I had never heard of Ojai before, but my photographer Katie had been wanting to go and I'm always up for an adventure. It didn't take long for me to fall hard for this idyllic little town that's somehow managed to be kept a secret (for the most part) from the masses. So if you're looking for a retreat from the hustle + bustle of southern California to enjoy scenic landscape, delicious wine and the perfect touch of quirkiness, look no farther than Ojai.

greetings from ojai california
caravan outpost ojai california

I can honestly say I wouldn't have loved Ojai as much as I did if it weren't for our accommodations. We had the great pleasure of staying at Caravan Outpost- a community of beautiful Airstream trailers set in an awesome garden setting.  Not only is the concept of staying in an Airstream cool, but so is everything else about the property. They have a slack line, corn hole boards, bicycles and picnic tables all available to use freely.

I'm not much of a fan for "roughing it" but Caravan Outpost is hardly that. They have in-unit refrigerators, bathrooms and even vinyl players (with plenty of records you can choose from). There's also a bathroom in each Airstream, but also the option to go indoors at their main outpost to use modern, full-functioning showers + toilets.

My favorite part of our stay was the community fire pit where you could always find people to chat with (and great music always on). We had so much fun talking with the owners and learning more about Ojai.

Long story short, Caravan Outpost gives you all the charm of camping without any of the hassle (plus a comfortable bed instead of a sleeping bag). It was hands down the most unique place I stayed on my road trip and someplace I'll definetley return.

KNEAD BAKING COMPANY

For breakfast one morning, our friends at Caravan Outpost sent us (by bike of course) to KNEAD- a family run artisan bakery that specializes in cakes, pastry, desserts, breads, breakfast, lunch, picnic fare and more. Their baked goods are all about texture- whether it's crumbly, chewy, crunchy or creamy- you'll want to eat all of it. Their recipes are a reflection of a life long love of food that truly shines (not to mention, they use local ingredients like orange-tangerine honey organic walnuts + seasonal fruit/veggies). It was the perfect place to enjoy a delicious breakfast on the patio and soak up the Ojai sunshine.

BEACON COFFEE

The next morning, we took another recommendation (along with the bikes) from Caravan Outpost + went to Beacon Coffee. This cool little coffee house has a great atmosphere and even better coffee. The owners spend several weeks per year visiting with all their producers all over the world in hopes to bridge the gap between the grower and the consumer. We had some insanely delicious avocado toast and struck up a conversation about travel with a local couple who was heading to Cambodia the next day. We went back again our final morning on the way out of town for one last cup of coffee, and I'm already looking forward to the next one I get to drink there.

BART'S BOOKS

If you haven't noticed by now, we didn't drive anywhere in Ojai. Why would you when the weather is perfect and you can reach everything by bike? To continue the time outdoors, we went to Bart's Bookshop- a bookstore unlike any other because it's outside. We loved browsing the selection while simultaneously soaking up the California sunshine.

As if Ojai weren't amazing already, did I mention they have great wine? We biked to Topa Mountain Winery, which is situated under the watchful eye of the Topa Topa Mountain range in the Upper Ojai Valley. They boast exceptional wines made from grapes grown in the Ojai Valley Region, but that's not the only great thing about this place. Their tasting room and entertaining grounds are the perfect place to enjoy Ojai's beautiful weather. Set under the mountain scenary, you'll love unwinding with a glass of wine, live music or a game of corn hole.

We also biked to The Ojai Vineyard for a tasting. While they don't have the large entertaining grounds like Topa Mountain Winery, they have a beautiful indoor tasting room and a delicious selection of Ojai wines to taste.

Overall, Ojai is a dreamy little destination that's a great addition to add to the itinerary if you're planning a trip to LA or Santa Barbara (stay tuned for more on those destinations next week!) I'd say the most ideal months to visit are September and October or April and May (although we went in February and it was gorgeous). Summers are hot and dry, so if you don't want that I'd avoid July or August. Temperatures in the winter (November-March) can drop to single digits during the night, so just be mindful of what you're likely to encounter and plan accordingly.

So there you have it! I hope you get to experience Ojai for yourself so you can fall in love with it as much as I did. Stay tuned tomorrow for more about my recent trip to one of my favorite places- San Diego!

xx,

Whitney
