NAPA VALLEY TRAVEL GUIDE

Ever since I first started appreciating wine, I’ve dreamed of visiting Napa Valley. While I knew it would be stunningly beautiful and someplace I'd love, I also anticipated a sense of pretension. I mean, can you blame me? Napa is home to some of the best wine in the entire world (we’re talking serious epicurean knowledge). But I couldn't have been more wrong. I had nothing but kind and hospitable encounters everywhere we went and there truly wasn't a single moment where I wasn't impressed.

While there are still tons of places I want to go back and experience that I didn't have time for this trip, I've pulled together everything you need to plan your own Napa Valley getaway that's sure to be unforgettable.

STAY

NAPA VALLEY MARRIOTT HOTEL & SPA

Regardless of where you decide to stay in Napa, remember that these wineries are spread out across sprawling estates (not condensed city blocks designed for walking everywhere). Be responsible and arrange transportation for all tastings (cabs, Uber, or private car services). With that said, I was so happy with Marriott Napa Valley's location and proximity to everything. We were close to downtown Napa, Yountville (one of my favorite towns!) and all the wineries we chose to visit.

Once we arrived, I was even more pleased and so impressed with the attention to detail and hospitable staff that greeted us (in all sincerity, everyone went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and taken care of).

Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa was, and will continue to be a premier Napa Valley oasis that I highly recommend for your visit.

EAT

BOUCHON

World renown Chef Thomas Keller opened Bouchon, offering authentic French bistro fare with unfailing attention to detail in both ingredients and presentation. Their seasonal menu and raw bar selections change throughout the year, while staples like roast chicken, leg of lamb, and trout amandine remain as consistent, year-round favorites. The Vin en Carafe program at Bouchon features selections made exclusively for the restaurant from top wineries in Napa Valley and France.

Bouchon has consistently received the highest of accolades from both the food industry and international press ever since it opened (including being awarded a Michelin Star). Which is why I didn't skip a beat to try as many dishes as possible (including my first taste of escargot-- which I actually loved!) But my favorite part was that their impressive reputation didn't stand in the way of fantastic service. We were greeted with complimentary champagne and sent off after a celebratory birthday dessert. All of our questions were answered knowledgeably without the slightest hint of pretentiousness. I loved everything about our dinner experience there and would definitely go back.

BOUCHON BAKERY

bouchon bakery

Just next door to Bouchon Bistro, Chef Thomas Keller opened the doors of his first Bouchon Bakery. Located in Yountville, California, Bouchon Bakery was first conceived as a way to provide these restaurants with one-of-a-kind breads. Quickly, the bakery blossomed into an important establishment in its own right. In the style of classic French boulangeries, the bakery features a wide selection of artisanal breads and classic desserts inspired by Chef Keller’s memories of life in France, as well as his own childhood in the United States.

Pastry chef Nicholas Bonamico makes an array of sweet delights including classic Viennoiserie, such as croissants and pain au chocolat, breakfast items like muffins and coffee cakes as well as an ever-changing selection of tarts, cookies and other treats (we left with enough macarons to feed a small army). The bakery also offers a full range of espresso drinks and coffee, custom-blended by Chef Keller’s longtime partner Equator Coffee Roasters. You can also enjoy a full meal with savory items like sandwiches, soup, salads and quiche. Be warned that this gem is no secret, so you can expect a line out the door starting before they even open (but it's worth it!)

R+D KITCHEN

R+D Kitchen is a local favorite in the heart of Napa Valley and offers crisp and flavorful dishes in a quintessential indoor-outdoor space. We sat in adirondack chairs by fire pits outside for happy hour before moving indoors for dinner, which makes sense because R+D is inspired by California's indoor/outdoor culture with spaces that are light filled and intimate in feel. The Thai Tuna Roll was arguably the best sushi I've ever eaten, and I still dream about their Cashew Kale Salad.

OXBOW PUBLIC MARKET

Located in the vibrant Oxbow District in downtown Napa, Oxbow Public Market is the community gathering place for great food and wine. It's where both locals and visitors connect and there's always something  happening -- live music, cooking demos, wine and beer tastings, or the farmers market. It's where you can find local, artisanal ingredients -- the same ingredients the best Napa Valley restaurants use -- from meat to fish, cheese, charcuterie, organic produce, fresh baked bread, olive oil and more. We stopped in on our way out of town for our caffeine fix at Ritual Coffee and breakfast at Model Bakery (both were fantastic!)

DRINK

ARTESA

artesa winery napa

Artesa was our first stop in Napa, and I can't think of a more stunning setting to kick off our trip. The sweeping views from the estate are enough to take your breath away. We were greeted with delicious Cava (which we learned got it's name from the roots of Artesa's Spanish winemaking family Codorníu Raventós) and a private tour of the grounds to learn about the winery's history. It opened in 1991 as Codorníu Napa, later renamed Artesa – which is Catalan for “handcrafted” – in 1997, and has since become a leading producer of artisan wines from the varietals for which Carneros and Napa Valley are best known: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. They handcraft their wines from single vineyard blocks, treating them individually and keeping them separate throughout the winemaking process. All the wines we tasted were incredible (although my personal favorites were the Chardonnay Estate Reserve and the Codorniu Grand Reserve Brut Rosé.) Schedule a tour of your own, or pop in for a tasting to drink up the view (and a variety of delicious wine).

The Domaine Carneros grounds are so beautiful, you could sit and admire them for hours.  Pair with their delicious sparkling wine flights (my favorite was their Brut Rosé) and you'll stay even longer. We had the best time sitting on the patio and drinking it all in. Reservations are required, so call or book online in advance.

domaine chandon

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've likely seen or tried Chandon at some point in your life. This winery was established in 1973 by Moët et Chandon as the first French-owned sparkling wine producer in Napa Valley. It's no secret that champagne should only be called so if it was grown in the Champagne region of France (which Moët et Chandon is). So abiding by the appropriate nomenclature, Chandon prides themselves as a premium "sparkling wine" maker. We had such a fantastic time touring the grounds and learning about the entire process from growing to sipping. I would have thought that since I could purchase such widely distributed product anywhere that there was no need to buy anything during my visit, but they have such a variety of delicious reserve bottles that you can only get on site. I came home with a bottle of the winery exclusive Sparkling Red to save for a special holiday and the étoile Tête de Cuvée I'll pop for another celebratory occasion someday.

You can choose from a variety of tastings, but I highly recommend the private tour for a more intimate and informative experience. Book online or call to schedule.

charles krug

Charles Krug was a Prussian immigrant who established his winery in 1861 (now under the ownership of the Mondavi family) and has been producing the finest handcrafted Bordeaux varietals in Napa for over 70 years now. They own 850 acres of prime Napa Valley land (located in St. Helena, Yountville, Carneros appellations and on Howell Mountain.) We went for a private tour of the cellar and a Reserve Flight Tasting (which included 5 fantastic reserve red wines). My favorite bottle that I brought home was their 2012 Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (which you can only find at the winery and a few select restaurants). Walk in tastings are welcome, however for the full experience book a tour in advance

v. sattui winery

Sattui Winery is located on a 38-acre organically farmed vineyard in St. Helena, and produces more than 60 different highly rated wines from 20 different varieties of grapes.

Every V. Sattui bottle is sold directly from the Winery, from their website or via the Wine Club (you won't find wines sold in stores anywhere else!) My absolute favorite was the 2012 Mt. Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon (which was recently awarded as "Wine of the Year").

V. Sattui Winery offers a consistently welcoming, delicious and authentic Wine Country experience for all guests and is the ideal Napa Valley destination for picnics, wedding and events. We loved meeting the staff + snacking on the delicious artisan cheese plate they curated for us during our tasting! Walk ins are welcome, but book a tour for the full experience.

One of the most unforgettable experiences of our entire trip was our sunrise hot air balloon ride with Napa Valley Aloft. Waking up before the sun on vacation feels somewhat counterintuitive, but you'll forget all about it the moment you take off. Our pilot Jay was one of the most fascinating people I've ever met, and he made our hour long flight so fun. I could go on and on about why you should put this at the top of your list, but I'll just let the pictures speak on my behalf. Just do yourself a favor and book your flight now

Napa exceeded any expectation I could have ever imagined. I was blown away by how kind, hospitable, and down to earth the people were. I was overwhelmed by all the beautiful scenery and delicious food + wine that was available. And I left with some of the most special and unforgettable memories with my best friends. I have every intention of planning more trips back in the future and can't recommend enough why you should pay a visit of your own.

Thanks so much to Visit Napa Valley and the other fantastic partners (Napa Valley Marriott Hotel & Spa, Artesa Winery, Napa Valley Aloft, Domaine Chandon, V.Sattui and Charles Krug) for A WONDERFUL TRIP! NAPA VALLEY TRAVEL GUIDE

Alys Beach Travel Guide

Every year, travelers flock to exotic locales in search of turquoise waters, stunning architecture and an escape from the ordinary- only you don't have to run to Bermuda or Havana to find it. Hidden along Florida’s Gulf Coast along Highway 30A, Alys Beach feels like another world entirely.  I completely fell in love with this idyllic town the moment I first laid eyes on it, and I somehow manage to fall in love a little more every time that I go back. I simply can't say enough good things or capture enough photos to even come close to doing it justice, but for the sake of everyone reading this I'm sure going to try.

STAY

One of the most charming aspects of this beach town is that you won’t find any hotels. Z-E-R-O. The Gulf Coast is notorious for high rise condominiums and hotels that are packed full of vacationers (ensuring crowded beaches and crazy strong tourist vibes). Alys however, is a tranquil oasis of beautiful homes. Some are privately owned. Some are available for rent. And they all boast stunning Bermudan architecture that will wow you at first glance. You can call 850.213.5555 for more information, or click below to book a rental and make yourself right at home.

EAT

GEORGE'S

George's is a charming beach cottage nestled in the heart of Alys, and arguably my favorite restaurant in all of Florida (the Sesame Crab and Avocado Salad will change your life). Dishes fall into two categories: Behave and Misbehave. The Behave section features organic, spa-inspired dishes, while the Misbehave side touts traditional beach fare like fried seafood baskets and po-boys. The menu is rounded out with a thoughtfully curated wine list and a selection of decadent desserts. Add it to the top of your list and thank me later.

FONVILLE PRESS

Fonville Press is what dreams are made of. Never would I have guessed that you'd find me spending time during a beach trip sitting at a coffee shop. But Fonville isn't just any ordinary coffee shop.  Sure, they offer (delicious) breakfast, (also delicious) coffee, magazines, newspapers, books and snacks per usual coffee establishment. They also go a step further and serve insane desserts that are out of this world, as well as imported and domestic wines and beers (count me in). But what truly sets Fonville apart from any other coffee experience is the breath-taking atmosphere. No matter which way you enter, where you sit, or what the weather is doing- your eyes are in for a treat. With it's bamboo draped awnings, regal potted palms or bright white exterior with vibrant pops of red- let's just say the next time you walk into a Starbucks you'll feel sad. Top it all off with an extremely warm staff, and Fonville is pretty much one of my favorite places on planet earth.

CALIZA

Caliza serves contemporary American cuisine in an al fresco setting that overlooks the town’s stunning pool. Any meal served by candles, soft lighting and Bermudan architecture is perfectly alright with me. It's the perfect place to retreat after a day at the beach if you want delicious food and drink (and polished, friendly service). The menu was created by Executive Chef Kevin Korman and team, and focuses on artisan, seasonal ingredients that are sourced from regional purveyors, showcasing the restaurant’s Gulf Coast locale (the perfect mix of healthy and indulgent!) Try an artisanal cocktail during happy hour at the open-air bar, and I'll dare you to find a setting that you prefer more.

CHARLIE'S DONUTS

Charlie’s Donut Truck opens early each morning, serving fresh, handmade donuts and pastries. But be sure to get there early (they open at 6:30am) because they likely won't last long! These decadent donuts (like red velvet cake, blueberry cake, sour cream pound cake, and rainbow sprinkle to name a few) are a popular way to start the day in Alys.

SHOP

NEAT

The NEAT Bottle Shop offers a curated collection of artisan spirits, wines, and craft beers. Their staff is incredibly knowledgeable and can help you pick out the perfect bottle (of whatever you're in the mood for). They also have high-quality bar tools, mixers, and glassware available for purchase so you can whip up a craft cocktails at your beach house. Not only is it a great place to pick up everything you need for your libation of choice, but it also introduces small batch producers and locally made items to the 30A community. Visit and you'll be inspired to explore the vast world of top rated varietals and craft cocktails.

The Tasting Room (also part of NEAT and connected to the Bottle Shop) lets you discover a new favorite right there in person. If you're wanting to take your experience beyond simply sipping, the Tasting Room also hosts regular events with a variety of wineries, breweries and distilleries.

ALYS SHOPPE

Alys Beach certainly sets itself apart stylistically, so it's only natural that they have their very own shoppe to mirror that ethos. I popped in to pick up a few different looks to wear during my visit (everything you see pictured is currently available for purchase!) Not only is the shoppe filled with an impressive selection of items you’re sure to love, but the staff is incredibly helpful and warm- ensuring a top of the line shopping experience.

ANN HARTLEY

Ann Hartley is a collection from around the world: clothing, jewelry, home furnishings and gifts-- all in one shop.  My traveler's heart pitter-patters just thinking about the stories behind these pieces: hand embroidered tablecloths or colonial Mexican antiques from San Miguel. Gorgeous hand embroidered linens and pillows from Marrakech.  Bronze sculptures from Mali, fabrics from the Ivory Coast, silk velvet pillows from Uzbekistan—all treasures from around the world. Be prepared to travel across the globe the moment you walk in, and to fall in love with these beautiful pieces.

Alys is brimming with beautiful experiences that are sure to leave a strong impression. So whether you're looking to plan a girl's trip, family vacation or a romantic escape, I guarantee that it will provide you with an unforgettable getaway. If you have any questions about booking, don't hesitate to drop me a line at theblondeatlas@gmail.com.

A HUGE thanks to the incredibly talented Moriah Sutton for exploring Alys with me and photographing our experience along the way. You are a gem of a person and were so fun to work with!

Travel-Savvy Souvenir Shopping

travelshopping.jpg

What traveler doesn’t love to bring a little piece of their vacation home to remember a destination by? The problem is, we often fall prey to those souvenir faux-pas that eventually end up in the trash or the back of a closet (tacky t-shirts, coffee mugs, keychains… you know you’ve got ‘em).

Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes you’ll find a diamond in the rough. But I’d argue that most people box themselves in and only stick to those unoriginal items when it comes to finding something to bring home.

So if you’re looking to branch out, here are some great alternatives to finding the perfect souvenir on your next adventure.

JEWELRY

italy jewelry

Jewelry is one of the more widespread alternatives when it comes to non-conventional souvenirs, and for good reason. It’s something that’s popular among practically every culture across the globe, and can be worn everyday. I love to look for statement pieces that pop and grab attention (like my turquoise drop stone earrings I snagged in Cinque Terre).  They’re intricate and unique, which has lead to some great gateway  conversation for telling some of my favorite travel stories.

KITCHEN ITEMS

barcelona cheese board

One of my favorite pieces of travel advice I’ve ever received was to look for items for the kitchen. It’s unrealistic to think every souvenir you purchase will sit on display to always be seen. But kitchen items are something you’ll likely see on a regular basis, even if they live in a drawer.

Not much of a cook? Don’t worry, I’m not exactly Julia Childs myself (by that, I mean my fridge currently contains sparkling water, champagne and a variety of cheese… and nothing else). Look for the kind of items you’ll actually use. For me, that meant things like tapas plates and cheese boards. I’ve acquired tapas bowls from Belize + Capri, a cutting board from Barcelona (pictured above), olive oil from Rome, a cheese board from Greece, spices from a market in Nice… the list goes on. So now when you throw together a cheese plate, you can relive an experience instead of staring at some meaningless dish from T.J. Maxx.

TEXTILES

paris scarf
paris scarf

I understand the intention behind buying a t-shirt of a destination you visit. You want to tell your story. Except if you’re wearing a t-shirt that screams PARIS loudly across the front, you’ve let the t-shirt steal your tale right out from under you. Instead, search for other forms of textiles you can wear. While in Paris, I stumbled upon a quaint boutique in the heart of Saint Germain where white haired French women were hunched over sewing machines making some of the most lovely scarves I’ve ever seen (so I bought 4 of them). And now? When someone compliments my scarf, I get to tell the story of my experience instead of my clothes telling it for me.

LOCAL SPECIALTIES

barcelona fan

Scarves are a Parisian staple that beautifully represented my experience in France. But every destination boasts a different specialty. I opted for a tartan blanket in Scotland, a teapot in London, a leather wallet in Italy, and a hand-painted fan in Barcelona (pictured above). Do your research on the front end to ensure you know what you’re looking for. But take note, because chances are you won’t find these items (at least not the best options) in the conventionally labeled “shopping districts” (which are almost always large chains you’d find in every city). Scope out the local markets, where you’re guaranteed to find a variety of artisan goods to choose from.

BOOKS

The Old Town Bookshop in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The Old Town Bookshop in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Shakespeare and Company in Paris, France

Shakespeare and Company in Paris, France

Whether you’re a literary nerd or the farthest from being a bookworm, books are a fantastic souvenir to remember your travels by. You can find coffee table books to decorate your home with that are brimming with beautiful photography (some of my favorites are from adored museums and destinations of mine like Musee d’Orsay or nature scenes of Jackson Hole). While these are beautiful options, consider yourself warned that they’re heavy and can make that 50 pound weight limit for your suitcase a difficult limit to stay under. You can also find some wonderful bookshops that are chalk full of history and character. Snag a classic like The Great Gatsby that can live on your shelf with a memory to boot.

WINE + SPIRITS

paris champagne
paris champagne

Again, disclaimer that this recco will come at the expense of a heavy suitcase, but one of my favorite things to add to when I travel is my wine collection. Of course, this is more ideal when you’re in or near a region that specializes in wine, but nonetheless it’s fun to do for a variety of reasons. I always buy 2 bottles of each kind: one to drink while I’m travelling, and one to bring home. So now, I have a cork to save and remember the time I drank champagne on the lawn of the Eiffel Tower and another bottle of the same kind to bring home with me. Seeing all the bottles on my wine rack at home reminds me of each unique experience, and allows me to relive each one every time I open one up.

Regardless of what you decide to bring home with you, use common sense.  Do you drink most of your coffee at the office or an environment where you don’t use your own mug? Then a coffee mug may not be the right souvenir for even the greatest caffeine addict. The goal is to find useful products you can weave into your everyday life--just with some fantastic stories hidden within them.
